WIGHTON STRIKE STINGS THISTLE

Eddie Johnson’s team selection was determined by illness, injury and suspension as Kyle Clark and Greg Warwick were late call-offs, with Kerr Waddell suspended. Josh Skelly, listed as substitute, was pressed into service from the off and Cammy Kerr played alongside skipper Ben Priest in Waddell’s absence.

Priest’s men made a bright start, however. Craig Wighton burst through the Partick Thistle defence, but keeper Marc Waters turned the striker’s shot round the post. From the corner, the ball fell to Wighton again whose shot with the outside of his foot hit the bar.

However, Dundee were stung after only six minutes when Thistle took the lead, a cross from James Penrice finding the head of Kevin NISBET who steered the ball past David Mitchell from close range.

Skelly almost replied immediately when he lifted the ball over the head of the Jags keeper but the striker was disappointed to see his effort go narrowly over the bar.

Thistle new boy Antonio German started off on the left wing and was proving a handful for Dark Blues right back Sam Dryden. The former QPR man, signed from Indian side, Kerala Blasters, worked his way into the box to fire in a shot that Mitchell had covered.

He then headed on for Thistle striker Nisbet, but Priest was on hand to clear the danger.

The home side were on top at this stage and Gary Fraser had two attempts, one which was blazed over the bar and the other saved by Mitchell. Fraser was fortunate not to receive two yellow cards inside a minute as, just after being booked for knocking the ball away, he committed a bad foul.

Partick started the second period well, with Mitchell having to save Penrice’s shot with his legs, but the Dens men gradually fought their way back into the game.

Calvin Colquhoun got on the end of a Dryden cross but hit his shot too high and the midfielder also directed a header straight into the arms of keeper Waters.

From a Dryden throw-in Wighton put his effort just wide of the post, but Thistle were dangerous coming forward and when Priest missed a high ball, Nisbet rattled Mitchell’s bar.

In another Thistle raid Andy Black showed remarkable coolness when he played keepy-uppy on his own goal line before clearing the ball.
As the minutes ticked by, Wighton was again through on goal but his shot was diverted for a corner, but the equaliser was only delayed by a few minutes.

With three minutes left, WIGHTON dragged the ball across the face of the penalty box before shooting and finding the corner of the net.

And Dundee could have won it in the dying seconds. A Skelly free kick put Wighton in again but the youngster’s shot was kicked off the line by Partick’s Scott Whiteside.

FT: Partick Thistle 1 Dundee 1
