Dundee’s drew their first pre-season friendly against Birkirkara at the Luxol Sports Club in
Malta on Friday night.
Ludovic Roy was the first keeper to be
tested getting down to save in ten minutes, while at the other end
Jim Lauchlan came closest for the Dark Blues, powering in a header
midway through the half which the Birkirkara keeper held.
In a fast, open game the early stages
saw both sides fail to make the best of midfield possession, but as
the half progressed Dundee came more into the game with David O’Brien
getting in some good crosses after runs down the left, though Roy was
called into action again in 37 minutes saving a shot from outside the
box following Birkirkara’s first corner of the match. There were four trialists in Dundee’s starting eleven with Sean Webb and Jim Lauchlan in partnership at the back.
Wholesale changes at half time saw six changes - with Bryan Deasley partnering Mickael Antoine-Curier up front as the second half got under way.
Eric Paton fired in a free kick and
from it Craig Forsyth brought a save from the keeper as Dundee
pressed and Mickael Antoine-Curier didn’t connect properly in front
of goal from a Forsyth cross.
Antoine-Curier almost made amends
moments later, coming close with a stinging drive from just inside
the penalty area.
With nine minutes left Lauchlan and the
other remaining trialist were replaced by Gary MacKenzie and Ross
Grant.
Dundee had been comfortable at the back
in the second period but Birkirkara almost
snatched a win as Roy dived full length and was relieved to see the
ball slip past the post. Dundee—Roy, Cowan (Paton 46), Webb (Grant
81), Lauchlan (MacKenzie 81), Malone (Forsyth 46), Trialist (Young 73),
McHale, Trialist (Daquin 46), O’Brien (Gilhaney 46), McMenamin
(Antoine-Curier 46), Davidson (Deasley 46).

Dundee will play their first pre-season match against Maltese Cup Winners Birkirkara at the Luxol Sports Club on Friday evening and the game is scheduled to kick off at 7.30pm local time (6.30pm UK time) with an admission price of €5.00.
The squad went through a light training session tonight (pictured), watched by our man in Malta, Andy Lynn, including spending around an hour working on set pieces ahead of Friday’s game.
Four trialists are likely to get an outing in that game, including Jim Lauchlan who has made a big impression during his short time with the squad with the general feeling amongst the squad being that Lauchlan has a big personality and tremendous attitude. The Dutch striker who joined up with the squad this morning has fitted in well too.
Gary MacKenzie will sit out Friday’s match with blisters, though they are not serious, while Ludovic Roy has slight hamstring problems but will be fit to face Birkirkara.

After a week and a bit of hard work, Dundee’s squad got the afternoon off on Wednesday, taking a boat trip out to the Blue Lagoon. Jim Thomson who’s in Malta with the squad told us that the weather on the Mediterranean island has been ideal and that the hotel, training facilities and most importantly the hospitality shown by the locals has been superb.
Andy Lynn our website reporter for the trip traveled out on Wednesday and he’ll be going along to watch the evening training session on Thursday and to chat and picture some of the squad for us, and on Friday he'll be covering the one match to be played on the trip.
That match, against Maltese Cup Winner Birkirkara, is scheduled to kick off at 7.30pm local time (6.30pm UK time) on Friday night. Birkirkara were drawn against Croatian giants Hajduk Split in the UEFA Cup draw made this week. Admission to the match will cost €5.00.

Tonight at Dens the board considered various interests for want away full back Paul Dixon. The board considered an offer from Dundee United. The offer met the clubs valuation and was considered to be the best deal for Dundee Football Club, therefore the club have given Paul and his agent permission to speak to Dundee United regarding a move to Tannadice.
Furthermore the board can advise that we have withdrawn our interest in securing the signature of defender Chris Innes. After initially agreeing a deal at the higher end of our wage structure we have been made aware that the player is considering an increased offer from another club. We have advised the player that we have withdrawn our interest and wish him all the best for the future.
The club are still in negotiations with four players regarding signing. Two of which will join the squad for pre season in Malta.

NEW SEASON FIXTURES Dundee will make the long trip to Dingwall to face 2nd Division Champions Ross County on the opening day of the new IRN-BRU Scottish Football League season on August 2nd. It’s a tricky opener for Alex Rae’s men - The Dark Blues have never won a competitive match at Victoria Park, and County have former Dees Dyron Daal and Danny Griffin amongst their squad for the new campaign.
The first home league game for the Dee will come on the following Saturday (9th) when former Dens favourite John Brown brings his Clyde side to the City of Discovery. Before that there’s the First Round of the CIS League Cup which will be played in the midweek following the Ross County opener.

Former Gretna captain Chris Innes has agreed terms with Dundee but a last minute personal hitch meant that the defender has not yet signed for the Dark Blues. The club hope that a deal can be completed later in the week. Chief Executive Dave MacKinnon said "We've agreed terms and seem to have ticked all the boxes, but something came up at the last minute and it will be later in the week before we know for definite whether Chris will be coming here.
Former Dundee keeper Rab' Douglas was at Dens too this evening, he's under contract to Leicester City until 31st of July and has asked Dundee for training facilities which the club were happy to agree to - Rab' will be involved in pre-season training with the Dark Blues

Dave MacKinnon spoke to dfctv.co.uk and the official website and explained where the club were getting the finance to bring in a string of new players over the summer "The fans will know this club can’t operate with an overdraft facility so we can’t magic money out of the air" said the Chief Executive "We can’t pay money that we don’t have."
"We’ve been very prudent with our budgets over the years that we’ve been here, in our first year we were very meagre with what we spent on the playing budget, we were able to increase it slightly last year and this year the we’re seeing the benefitof what we’ve done behind the scenes to try and get the cost base into line plus the fact that we’ve had some investment.

Dundee have been drawn away to Alloa Athletic in the first round of the Scottish Football League Challenge Cup. The tie is scheduled to be played on Saturday 26th July 2008.
The match will be Dundee's first competitive fixture of the season and a first look for the Dark Blues at Alloa's artificial playing surface. Dundee last visited the 'Wee County' to face Alloa in a League Cup tie in 2000 when a goal from James Grady and a brace from Willie Falconer saw them ease into the next round - though there had been an early scare as 'The Wasps' took a first minute lead thanks to Martin Cameron's strike.
The season before saw Alloa pull off one of the best results in their history when they won at Dens by a single Gregor McKechnie goal to dump Dundee out of the League Cup.

It was a busy weekend for Alex Rae and Dave MacKinnon who sat down with five prospective signings and their agents. The response from the players was very positive and Dundee are hopeful of adding some new names to the squad in the near future. Dave MacKinnon empasised to us that the most important element of signing new players was that they had to want to play for Dundee FC.
There may well also be news in the next week or so of a pre-season trip for the Dark Blues. The Club are in negotiations for a 10 to 14 day trip to Europe to kick start their preparation for the new campaign. It's likely that the team would play a couple of games while away.

The meaningful end of Dundee’s season came with a whimper rather than a bang as they went down 1-0 to a Brian Gilmour goal to Scottish Cup Finalists Queen of the South at Palmerston.
His goal came three minutes from half time by which time Hamilton had more or less sealed promotion – they led Clyde 2-0 at New Douglas Park.
Dundee rarely threatened to score and there was little for 566 strong travelling support to cheer, not that they kept quiet, the team getting the same sort of vocal backing that has been a feature of a campaign where Dundee have challenged but not quite managed to reward that support.

Scott Robertson returned from six weeks out with a torn calf muscle to round off the scoring as Dundee eased past Stirling Albion 3-0 at Dens to keep their season alive, and the good news is that the midfielder looked fit and eager and looks like he’ll be available for the final two games of the season. Hamilton’s win at Livingston though means that Dundee need former Dee John Brown’s Clyde side to do them a favour at New Douglas Park next weekend, a win for the Accies will render the final match of the season at Dens between the top two meaningless.

MATCH REPORT Dundee’s promotion chances took a big blow when they lost to a late Mark Roberts goal at Firhill. Home side Partick Thistle had performed well in the second half after being battered by a positive Dundee side in the opening forty five minutes, and the catalyst for their comeback was the introduction of winger Stevie Murray at the interval – he gave Dundee’s defence a torrid time and Partick created the bulk of chances in the second half.
The best chance though fell to Dundee and to the normally deadly feet of Mickael Antoine-Curier, he made space in the box drew the keeper and curled his shot round him, the large travelling support rose to acclaim the strike only for their cheers to die in their throats as the effort slipped just wide.
It was a miss that would be punished late on with both sides chasing a winner as Roberts played a neat one-two and slotted home with just two minutes to go to earn the home side the points.

Following repeated incidents involving a minority of fans at Dundee FC away games this season, a meeting was held on Thursday evening between officials from the Dundee Supporters Association and management of Dundee Football Club.
Both sides condemned this behaviour and issued an appeal to all Dundee FC supporters to get behind the team in the crucial matches coming up over the next few weeks. It was agreed that both organisations would adopt a “zero tolerance” policy towards any future incidents of unacceptable behaviour.
Meetings will also be held over the next few weeks with individual Club Secretary’s and bus organisers. Dundee FC also confirmed that the individual who ran on to the pitch at Saturday’s cup tie with Queen of the South and was dealt with by the courts on Monday has been banned from Dens Park for a period of 2 years.

It’s hard to exaggerate the impact that Mickael Antoine Curier has had on the form of the side since arriving at Dens, two goals against Livingston on Tuesday evening took him to eight goals in five games, with assistant manager Dave Farrell saying of the Frenchman’s first strike “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ball struck harder” while Alex Rae described it simply as “Phenomenal”. That’s a fitting way to sum it up as the striker has just picked up the IRN BRU Scottish Football League Phenomenal Player of the Month for February.
Joanna Moffat interviewed Mickael for Dundee FC Online and the THE DEE, Dundee’s Matchday Magazine, Her interview can be seen after the break.

Dundee 2 Livingston 0
Mickael Antoine-Curier continued his sensational start to his Dens Park stay with a brace of goals to see off Livingston at Dens, and edge Dundee within three points of Hamilton ahead of Saturday’s top of the table clash. Those goals took Antoine-Curier’s tally in Dark Blue to eight goals in five matches.
Mike fired his first in 48 minutes running onto a Colin McMenamin through ball and lashing an eighteen yard rising shot home, visiting keeper Colin Stewart got a full hand to the ball but the power beat him.
Antoine-Curier’s second came twelve minutes later, by which time Livingston had been reduced to ten men, debut boy Murray Davidson being dismissed after a second bookable offence on 50 minutes. Mike’s goal came from a free kick just outside the box, awarded after David O’Brien had been brought down, Antoine-Curier placing his shot into the bottom corner via the inside of the post.

Joint IRN BRU Scottish Football League Manager of the Month Alex Rae was looking forward rather than back when he spoke to the press after Dundee had slumped out of the Scottish Cup “We’ll be in on Sunday morning, regroup and get ready for Tuesday, that’s where the bread and butter is – the First Division Championship” said the boss “We’d have liked to go through in the cup but it wasn’t to be. The good thing is we’ll have some key players back because some of them weren’t up to the task in the cup game.

Dundee were dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Queen of the South. Goals from Stephen Dobbie and Ryan McCann gave the Dumfries side a 2-0 victory.
Queen’s opener came seven minutes
after half time when a ball over the top found Dobbie racing in on
goal, his first touch killed the ball perfectly and his second
dispatched his shot past Samson. Minutes earlier Jan Zemlik had
wasted Dundee’s one really good opportunity of the match, Jamie
McDonald spilling a Paul Dixon cross at the feet of the striker, but
the home keeper made up for his mistake by blocking the Czech’s
close range effort.
The clincher came late and was quite
extraordinary, Keeper Samson was in the Queens’ penalty area as
Eddie Malone fired in a last minute free kick, the ball ricocheted
around the box before falling for home right back Ryan McCann just
outside the area, he hammered the ball forward and amazingly found
the net from near 80 yards.
It made sure of a win that the
Doonhamers deserved, Dundee worked hard but lacked inspiration, while
the home side dominated the first half and created the better
opportunities of the second period.

It looked to be a point apiece in this
promotion battle but a winner deep into injury time by Colin
McMenamin saw Dundee’s bid for the First Division title boosted
after being pegged back twice by the Perth side.
The partnership of
Curier and McMenamin once again struck gold, sharing the three goals
between them, and this run of form could prove vital as the gap on
leaders Hamilton closed to two points with the teams still to meet
both home and away before the the title will be decided.
