Don't think so. They had 31 points going into the game but a better goal diff - ended on 32 with us and Aberdeen (Hearts had 33 I think) |

| I know our total of 32 points was the highest a relegated team had amassed. Not sure if the record still stands. It was all downhill thereafter, I often wonder what might have happened had Rangers won that night. |

| Thanks for all the great memories of the Dark Blues. It was worth starting this thread just to find out about the incredible 5-1 victory. I disagree about the comment that these days can't be repeated though. Why shouldn't we believe that we can crush the Old Firm over 90 minutes again? I not only think it's possible. I expect it to happen. We have easily the best board of directors in place since the inception of the Scottish Premier League. We are a force and if we get promoted we'll be feared once again, and rightly so. |

| The way I remember it is that Celtic fans were in the Provvy Road only. After the game, the ones who had left early were waiting at the corner of Dens Rd to confront Dee fans coming out of the Derry. As the surprised Dundee fans were chased down the road, those spilling out of the back of the Derry witnessed this and some of them aided their colleagues by chucking bottles from on high down on to the Celtic fans. Later that season the Old Firm Scottish Cup Final ended in a mass riot, leading to the introduction of the Criminal Justice Act, meaning nae mair carry-outs at the game. On the whole a good thing I think. |

And true to form Rangers got beat, G.Smith missed a few sitters against his former club, DFC got relegated and the next day Tommy Gemmell resigned. Me? I went on a two day smoker- student then of course, halcyon days indeed!!!
We also waited on a Rangers win - at home to Utd in 1976 as champions. The draw sent us down instead of them and started all our troubles. I still remember well listening to that fateful game on the radio.

| Rangers played a mostly reserve team that night and if utd had gone down, I think the corner shop might not have reopened. |

| Gers had at least three in Scotland squad that week and they missed game v Utd -likely Jardine, Greig and an other or more - would not be allowed now and thinking on it completely lacked sporting integrity - will integrity be upheld with RFC this season? |

| I have the newspapers from the 4-1 game and remember it well.We played well 1st half yet somehow went a goal down.2nd half attacking the Provy Rd goal we were immense.The 2 Dundee enclosures were in full voice as Dundee hammered them! A great day!....As for 1980 it was a stunning sunny day and i wanted to go to the match but was advised not to go as there was a lot of hassle at games at that time so i went to The Ferry instead for a while!When i got home my mum was frantically waving me in saying "your teams 4-1 up"...Of course i thought it was a wind up until i heard the commentator on my dads radio shout "Its 5!!!"32 years go but a vivid memory..and of course they won it playing in the classic Admiral strip! |

Had Utd gone down they would have gone part-time, Jim McLean's words, not mine.
The 4-1 game I did not attend but listened intently to the scores coming through, it was still the set-up of visits to the grounds every ten minutes back then. I don't think we were the commentary game either as I seem to remember the tension as they kept saying "There's been another goal at dens Park" fully expecting Celtic to be roaring back at us, being a Dee, even at 4-1 I wasn't sure we'd hold on.
The 5-1 game was something else, no-one expected that result or performance, we played exceptionally well that afternoon and could easily have scored more, just a shame we didn't produce this form more often as we wouldn't have gone down.
The whole thing started on the Friday night for me, out with the guys with whom I'd be attending the game and ended up at one of those all-nighters in the 'Bowling Alley' Student's Union, Snowballs they were called, live bands and substance taking I'm led to believe. A few hours kip on a mate's floor then off to GJ's for a few before the game. No need to relive those precious moments again but I often visit that place in my memory when I think back on amazing dees games.
Having avoided the bottle and brick-throwing on Dens road after the match I intended going home as I was knackered but I bumped into a friend and went to the Social Club for a couple of pints. Ended up in an unbeatable doubles patnership on the pool table but had to leave by 7 due to the non-member rules of the clubs. Again, intended going home but bumped into another mate on the Hilltown and wandered into town. The rest of the evening is a total blur, sure I spent most of the evening in the old Oriental bar at the bottom of Commercial Street (don't think it had changed to The Argyll by then) and ended up at a mate's house in Ardler, the same one I'd crashed with on the Friday.
It must have been around 2pm on the Sunday when I phoned my dad to let him know I was ok then wandered home in a daze to watch the highlights on Scotsport before collapsing into bed. great weekend and all for a meaningless league game, I always wonder what would happen if we won a trophy again, ah well, I can dream.

| Nice one Dee62, really enjoyed your (vague) recollections of the day/weekend. I was playing at Glenesk Park that afternoon and could hear the roars coming from Dens every time a goal was scored. After a quick bath I headed into the clubbie for a post match pint and expecting the worst. That sense of gloom quickly turned into a night of celebration when we heard the Dee had won 5-1. |

| Another Celtic game from the 80's i remember was a 2-0 victory at Dens i think just before the Scottish cup meeting at Dens in 1985.Was the coldest match i had ever been to and the crowd numbers were heavily effected by the cold blizzard conditions.The Dundee fans in The Provy Rd (myself included) were all packed tightly under the enclosure but went mental when 2 very late goals gave us a welcome victory!Again i had the goals on betamax tape and i remember Dundee's goals being described by Archie as "an astonishing blast from Dundee"!!!Anyone remind me of the goal scorers etc please?? |

9th Feb 1985, Dundee 2-0 Celtic. Bobby Connor and Ray Stephen scored in the last 5 minutes and you're right, it was bitterly cold that day, my wife and I took refuge in GJ's beside the fire after the game to warm up before going home to witness the late 'blast' (Stephen's goal was a trundler from 3 yards) on the BBC2 news at 7pm. |

| Thanks Dee62.......Rays goal was a trundler!!! ....sparked great celebrations though!! I used to love the "banter" between the top of the Provy Rd and the away fans in the stand enclosure!!!Great memories! |
