The SPL started in 1998-1999, since then football in scotland has went downhill big time.
End result the national team have failed to qualify for the world cup since France 98, coincidence or what !!!!!! |

| Since then we've continued even more with the OF domination but they've generally been teams of non Scottish players to chase Champions League cash. |

I of the problems with the demise of the national team is the number of second rate non Scottish players playing for senior teams in Scotland. Every non Scottish player playing in a senior team is potentially keeping a Scottish born player out of the team. We are not exactly blameless as during the Bonetti era Dundee fielded a team that did not have a single Scottish born player in it.
The English cricket team suffered the same problem during the 80's and 90's due to the influx of top foreign players playing for the English county cricket teams. |

other leagues have influxes of foreign players
barcelona have 8 out of 24 foreign players [ messi arguably the worlds best player is plying his trade in a foreign league ] real madrid 14 out of 24 . bayern munich have 12 out of 24 man u 16 out of 36 , employment law between euro workers has had a major effect on football allowing for the transfer of players to other euro teams a lot more easily ,
I agree with Markie to an extent in that I dont think its a coincidence that since that start of the spl our national team have gone downhill , but its not the only reason , around scotland we have an abundance of players in various teams usually 16 and under going abroad and winning tournaments for their various clubs , but somehow their development is stunted by the scottish set up , fans expectations of where they think their teams should be playing put stress on clubs and they dont have the leeway to play young players and they dont get the time they need to grow , the finacial problems clubs have put pressure on team selection,
The demise of the reserve league has done nothing to help blood younger players , maybe that needs to be fully resurrected ,
Its a difficult situation and I dont know if anyone has the answers to this problem |

I think there are a whole bunch of things going on rather than association with the SPL. The cracks in Scottish football were starting to show before then. I'm sure the team we fielded at the Euro Championships (1996? I think) was one of the oldest squads to ever appear in the tournament. When they went there was nothing left. I think the alleged 'coaches' of those days have a hell of a lot to answer for in how they coached and educated young players. We went through a period of a decade at least of just awful national squads simply not up to the task and of course at club level many of our teams couldnt get passed first round ties with part timers from Iceland, Norway etc.
I think the senior team now is 'OK' at best, at least capable of making a game of it (which is where we were around '96). I do have some hope for the under-21's who turned in some very useful games against the Dutch recently (outplaying them I thought in the away match).

In Scotland we have always had good under 16 teams. However few of these players do not seem to be able to make the big step up to senior and international level.
Kevin Bain was captain of the Scotland under 16 team at the Under World Cup in Scotland about 1990 and he never really progressed at Dundee.
One problem can be changes of manager. The current manager thinks that a young player will be suitable playing his style of football. A new manager is appointed does not think the young player will make it and the player does not have his contract renewed at the end of his current contract.
This happens to lots of young players. How many young players from the Blue Heaven series on BBC Scotland made it to the top clubs.
Up to this season top clubs in England plus the Old Firm in Scotland would rather buy success than bring on young players. Several weeks ago I read in a Sunday newspaper that Wolves have told Leigh Griffiths that he is free to find another club. I think that Leigh Griffiths would do very well playing for Wolves in the Championship next season. There may of course be a clause in his contract which states that Wolves have to pay Dundee a sum of money if he plays a certain number of first team games for Wolves. |
